Source Evaluation

Westing, Arthur H. "Overpopulation and Climate Change." International Herald Tribune (Paris, France). 18 Feb 2010: 6. SIRS Researcher. Web. 25 Jul 2010.

I picked this sight because it is geared to the point of my essay. Overpopulation is a problem but you never hear the media talking about it. The more our population increases the more our greenhouse gasses also increase. Our population almost doubled in the last 40 years which means we have to be more aware and strict on emissions. My essay is about the New World Order conspiracy that has to do with population control. I tend to learn as much as I can about how our population can affect us.

Essay Proposal

What is the reality of having our whole society’s freedom being taken from us? The first thing that came to my mind when reading this story is if it could really happen today. Could our government brainwash enough people to turn against its own people? Would it be possible to trap and control the people in the United States? I know there are other cultures that have limited freedom especially with women, but it would be much harder to change a society that has a fair amount of freedom and take it away. I probably will look into religions and find out how certain cultures live by it. I want to know which societies come even close to the handmaid’s story. The thing that really intrigues me about this book is how the rest of the world does not know the truth. In the book, the Japanese were coming over to witness this unique culture of the handmaids. Can you really keep something that huge a secret from the rest of the planet? I think I am going to write my essay on how possible it can be to have a similar situation as in “The Handmaid’s Tale” come true. I’m not sure exactly how to go by doing this but I think I will start by looking up conspiracy theories. Lately I’ve been hearing more and more about conspiracies that are so big that most people will not believe them. I think America is trying to control us more and more and believe it will be just a matter of time before there is a breaking point. After some research I will have a better idea what others predict is going to happen to our culture, and if it will be controlled like in Atwood’s book. I think this will be an interesting topic to research because what I find out can affect me and everyone else in America.

My Thesis Question

Thesis Question: Why do the handmaids have to be so secretive?

Even though the handmaids do not have much freedom, the consequences they face may rely on their secrecy?

I think that my thesis is strong because it does not go into too many specifics and it can also be argued. I believe that it gives the reader something to think about before reading on.

Weak Thesis Statement

1) “A” is the weak thesis because it is too broad and it states what the author is going to write about.
2) “A” is a weak statement because it is just stating the obvious.
3) “B” is the weaker of the two because it just states that the jeans industry appeals to young adults. The other thesis is leaves more room for the reader to argue the point.
4) “A” is a very weak thesis that again just states the obvious and tells the reader what it’s about.
5) “A” is broke up into weak statements. “B” brings the statements together into a good thesis that is easier to read.

Mid Check In Blog

This class has been tough on me for English is not my best subject. The hardest thing for me is gathering my thoughts to start a paper. It seems like it takes me a very long time to get going, which is not good when I'm trying to fit school into my work schedule. When I finally get started then my stress level tends to reside. I haven't taken any classes where due dates are split up through the week. I find myself stuck at times because I don't have time to do homework and work my job. In other classes I use my days off to do nothing but homework to get caught up. On the other hand I can see how it can also help you be strategic with your time which is very important when taking online classes. For me, it is really stressing me out trying to get things turned in on time. On a good note, I have been learning quite a bit. The more I write the better I get and the easier it becomes. Writing literary analysis is something that I am not use to. I catch myself summarizing quite often because that is what I mostly have done. Analysis has strained my brain more than I want it to, but I guess that's the point. I have enjoyed the readings and find the stories hard to put down. It definitely makes it more enjoyable when your not forced to read about the boring stuff. Everything I have read I have liked and taken to heart. Hammil's "Necessity to Speak" made me aware how powerful ones voice can be. My goal for the second half is to be more focused. I need to be more relaxed and try not to get frustrated. This class is very important to me and I hope I can get through it while working around my job. Good luck to all!!
